Review -- She's a Boy: The Shocking True Story of Joe Holliday

She's a Boy: The Shocking True Story of Joe Holliday

I finished reading these memoirs a few days ago and I have to say that Joe's story has been with me ever since. Just like I could not put the book down, I cannot stop thinking about the many challenges that Joe and his family had to face since the day he was born with cloacal exstrophy.

Because of this rare birth defect, Joe's abdominal organs were malformed and exposed, and his genitals never fully developed -- thereby puzzling doctors and specialists as to which gender he belonged to.

Yes, Joe's life story is one of tears and frustration but, more importantly, it is also one of determination, courage and deep love: the devotion and support shown by his mother, grandmother and stepfather truly has no limit. They are the unsung heroes of this book.

Louise Chapman's writing is faultless and honest, and really brings the reader closer to the pain and suffering that Joe had to endure throughout most of his life. Louise and Joe have proven to form a great team here.

The Bibliovore's verdict
This is such a compelling and inspiring story. Joe is a modern-day hero in my opinion. Read this book and you will never complain about life's trivial matters again. This helps put everything back into perspective.
